Yogurt and Fruit Kabobs Recipe

  • Author: Jessica

Ingredients

Scale

This recipe is divided into two simple components: the vibrant fruit kabobs and the creamy, delicious yogurt dip. Using fresh, high-quality ingredients will make all the difference in flavor and presentation.

For the Fruit Kabobs:

  • 1 cup Fresh Strawberries: Halved or left whole if small. Their bright red color and sweet taste are the foundation of a classic fruit kabob.
  • 1 cup Cantaloupe Chunks: Cut into 1-inch cubes. This melon adds a lovely orange hue and a uniquely sweet, musky flavor.
  • 1 cup Fresh Pineapple Chunks: Cut into 1-inch cubes. Pineapple provides a tropical, tangy kick and a beautiful yellow color.
  • 1 cup Green Grapes: Seedless is best. They offer a satisfying snap and a tart-sweet flavor, adding a vibrant green to the rainbow.
  • 1 cup Blueberries: Fresh and plump. These little superfoods provide a deep blue/purple color and a burst of antioxidant-rich sweetness.
  • 1 cup Red Grapes: Seedless, for a different shade of color and sweetness. They add a deep red or purple hue to contrast with the strawberries.
  • Wooden or Metal Skewers: Approximately 10-12 skewers, about 8-10 inches long.

For the Creamy Yogurt Dip:

  • 1 ½ cups Plain Greek Yogurt: Full-fat or 2% Greek yogurt works best for a thick, creamy consistency that clings perfectly to the fruit.
  • 2 tablespoons Honey or Maple Syrup: This is for sweetness. You can adjust the amount based on your preference and the natural sweetness of your fruit.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract: A small amount enhances the other flavors and adds a warm, aromatic depth to the dip.
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon Lemon Zest: For a fresh, zesty kick that brightens the entire dip and complements the fruit beautifully.

Instructions

Follow these simple, step-by-step instructions to create your beautiful and delicious fruit kabobs. This process is easy enough for kids to help with, making it a fun family activity.

Step 1: Prepare the Yogurt Dip

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the plain Greek yogurt, your choice of honey or maple syrup, and the vanilla extract.
  2. If you’re using it, add the fresh lemon zest to the bowl.
  3. Whisk all the ingredients together until the mixture is completely smooth, creamy, and well-combined. There should be no lumps of yogurt or streaks of honey.
  4. Taste the dip and adjust the sweetness if necessary. You might want to add a little more honey if your fruit is on the tarter side.
  5. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator to chill while you prepare the fruit. Chilling the dip allows the flavors to meld together and ensures it’s refreshingly cool when served.

Step 2: Prepare the Fruit

  1. Gently wash all your fresh fruit under cool running water.
  2. Pat the fruit completely dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. This step is important, as excess water can make the kabobs slippery and dilute the flavor.
  3. Prepare the fruit for skewering:
    • Hull the strawberries (remove the green leafy tops) and slice larger ones in half.
    • Cut the cantaloupe and pineapple into uniform, bite-sized 1-inch cubes.
    • Remove the grapes from their stems.

Step 3: Assemble the Fruit Kabobs

  1. Set up an assembly station with your prepared fruit and skewers. This is the fun part where you can get creative!
  2. Begin threading the fruit onto the skewers one piece at a time. For the most visually appealing kabobs, create a repeating pattern or a “rainbow” effect. A great rainbow pattern to follow is: strawberry (red), cantaloupe (orange), pineapple (yellow), green grape (green), and blueberry (blue).
  3. Continue threading the fruit until the skewer is mostly full, leaving about 1-2 inches of space at the bottom to serve as a handle.
  4. Repeat this process with the remaining skewers and fruit until all the fruit has been used.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Arrange the completed fruit kabobs beautifully on a large platter, serving tray, or even standing up in a tall glass like a bouquet.
  2. Remove the chilled yogurt dip from the refrigerator and transfer it to a small, attractive serving bowl.
  3. Place the bowl of yogurt dip in the center of the platter with the fruit kabobs arranged around it.
  4. Serve immediately and watch everyone enjoy this refreshing, healthy, and colorful treat!
