Toasted Beef & Avocado Sandwich

  • Author: Jessica

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to create this mouthwatering Toasted Beef & Avocado Sandwich:

  • Thick-cut Artisan Bread (like Sourdough, Ciabatta, or Multigrain): 8 slices, about ½ to ¾ inch thick – The foundation of your sandwich, providing a sturdy base and delightful texture when toasted.
  • High-Quality Cooked Roast Beef: 1 pound, thinly sliced – Deli-style or leftover roast beef works perfectly; ensure it’s flavorful and tender.
  • Ripe Avocados: 2 large – Choose avocados that yield gently to pressure; they will provide the creamy, rich element.
  • Mayonnaise: ½ cup – The base for our zesty spread, adding moisture and richness.
  • Dijon Mustard: 2 tablespoons – Adds a tangy kick and depth of flavor to the spread.
  • Lemon Juice: 1 tablespoon, freshly squeezed – Brightens the avocado and prevents browning, also adds zest to the mayo.
  • Garlic Powder: ½ teaspoon – For a subtle savory note in the spread.
  • Onion Powder: ½ teaspoon – Complements the garlic and adds to the overall umami.
  • Salt: To taste – Enhances all the flavors.
  • Freshly Ground Black Pepper: To taste – Provides a gentle warmth and spice.
  • Unsalted Butter or Olive Oil: 2-3 tablespoons – For toasting the bread to golden perfection, adding flavor and crispiness.
  • Optional: Provolone or Swiss Cheese Slices: 4-8 slices – If you love cheese, this adds a melty, gooey dimension.
  • Optional: Lettuce or Arugula: A few handfuls – For added freshness and a peppery bite if using arugula.
  • Optional: Thinly Sliced Red Onion or Tomato: To preference – For extra crunch, sharpness, or juiciness.

Instructions

Follow these steps carefully to assemble the ultimate Toasted Beef & Avocado Sandwich:

  1. Prepare the Avocado Spread:
    • Halve the avocados, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.
    • Add 1/2 tablespoon of the lemon juice directly to the avocado. Mash roughly with a fork. You can leave it slightly chunky for texture or mash until smooth, according to your preference.
    • Season the mashed avocado with a pinch of salt and pepper. Set aside. The lemon juice will help prevent it from browning too quickly.
  2. Make the Zesty Mayo Spread:
    • In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, the remaining ½ tablespoon of lemon juice, garlic powder, and onion powder.
    • Whisk until well combined and smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. This spread will add a significant flavor boost.
  3. Warm the Roast Beef (Optional but Recommended):
    • You can gently warm the sliced roast beef. This can be done in a skillet over medium-low heat for a minute or two per side, or briefly in the microwave. Warming the beef enhances its flavor and texture, making the sandwich even more comforting. If using cheese, you can place the cheese slices on the beef during the last minute of warming to let it melt slightly.
  4. Toast the Bread:
    • Melt the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Alternatively, you can brush the outsides of the bread slices with olive oil.
    • Place the bread slices in the skillet. Toast for 2-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to do this in batches depending on the size of your skillet.
    • Alternatively, you can toast the bread in a toaster oven or under a broiler, watching carefully to prevent burning. If using a broiler, you might want to butter or oil the bread after toasting one side, then flip and toast the other.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Once the bread is toasted, lay out four slices on your work surface, toasted side down (this will be the inside of your sandwich).
    • Spread a generous layer of the zesty mayo on the inside of all eight slices of toasted bread (both the top and bottom pieces).
    • On the four bottom slices of bread (the ones you laid out), layer your ingredients:
      • Start with the warmed roast beef, distributing it evenly. If you melted cheese on the beef, it’s already there. If not, and you’re using cheese, place it on top of the beef now.
      • Next, carefully spread the mashed avocado mixture over the beef.
      • If using, add a layer of lettuce or arugula, followed by any sliced red onion or tomato.
    • Place the remaining four slices of bread on top, zesty mayo side down, to complete the sandwiches.
  6. Serve Immediately:
    • Gently press down on the assembled sandwiches. If desired, you can slice them in half diagonally for easier handling and a more appealing presentation.
    • Serve immediately while the bread is warm and crispy, and the fillings are at their best.
