Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Mash

  • Author: Jessica

Ingredients

  • Sweet Potatoes: About 3 pounds, choose medium to large sweet potatoes. These are the star of the show, providing natural sweetness, vibrant color, and a creamy texture when cooked. Look for firm sweet potatoes without blemishes.
  • Butter or Olive Oil: 4 tablespoons. Butter adds richness and a classic flavor, while olive oil offers a vegan alternative and a slightly lighter taste. Choose unsalted butter to control the salt level or a good quality extra virgin olive oil.
  • Milk or Plant-Based Milk: ½ cup. Milk contributes to the creamy texture and adds moisture. For a dairy-free version, almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk (canned, full-fat for extra creaminess) work wonderfully. Unsweetened varieties are recommended to control the sweetness.
  • Salt: ¾ teaspoon, or to taste. Salt enhances the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes and balances the flavors. Start with ¾ teaspoon and adjust to your preference after mashing.
  • Black Pepper: ¼ teaspoon, or to taste. Black pepper adds a subtle warmth and depth of flavor. Freshly ground black pepper is always preferable for the best taste.
  • Optional Spices: A pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger. These warm spices complement the sweetness of the sweet potatoes beautifully and add a festive touch, especially around the holidays. Use sparingly, as a little goes a long way.

Instructions

Making Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Mash is incredibly simple and mostly hands-off. Follow these easy steps for a perfect, creamy side dish every time:

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Begin by thoroughly washing the sweet potatoes under cool running water. This removes any dirt or debris from the skin. Next, peel the sweet potatoes using a vegetable peeler. Peeling ensures a smoother mash, but if you prefer a more rustic mash with the skins included for added fiber and nutrients, you can skip this step (just be sure to scrub them very well!). After peeling (or scrubbing), cut the sweet potatoes into roughly 1-inch cubes. Uniformly sized pieces will cook at the same rate, ensuring even cooking throughout.
  2. Load Up the Slow Cooker: Place the cubed sweet potatoes directly into your slow cooker. There’s no need to grease the slow cooker unless your model is prone to sticking. Add the butter (or olive oil) to the slow cooker, distributing it over the sweet potatoes. Pour in the milk (or plant-based milk). Sprinkle the salt and black pepper evenly over the sweet potatoes. If you are using any optional spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger, add them now as well.
  3. Slow Cook to Perfection: Cover the slow cooker with its lid. Set the slow cooker to cook on LOW heat for 4-6 hours, or on HIGH heat for 2-3 hours. The cooking time will vary depending on your specific slow cooker model and the size of the sweet potato cubes. You’ll know the sweet potatoes are done when they are fork-tender. This means you can easily pierce them with a fork with very little resistance.
  4. Mash and Creamify: Once the sweet potatoes are cooked through, it’s time to mash them. You have a few options for mashing, depending on your desired texture:
    • Immersion Blender: For the smoothest, creamiest mash, use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker. Be careful to avoid scratching the slow cooker insert. Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
    • Potato Masher: For a slightly chunkier, more rustic mash, use a traditional potato masher right in the slow cooker. Mash to your desired consistency, leaving some small lumps if you prefer a less smooth texture.
    • Electric Mixer: For a light and fluffy mash, carefully transfer the cooked sweet potatoes to a large bowl. Use an electric hand mixer or stand mixer to whip the sweet potatoes until they are light and airy. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make them gummy.
  5. Taste and Adjust: After mashing, taste the sweet potato mash. Adjust the seasoning as needed. You might want to add a little more salt, pepper, or even a touch more milk for creamier consistency. If you prefer a sweeter mash, you can add a drizzle of maple syrup or a teaspoon of brown sugar at this point, but the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes is usually sufficient.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Your Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Mash is now ready to serve! Keep it warm in the slow cooker on the “warm” setting until serving time, or transfer it to a serving dish. Garnish with a pat of butter, a sprinkle of fresh herbs like parsley or chives, or a dusting of cinnamon, if desired.
