Ingredients
- Cooked Chicken Breast (2 cups shredded): The heart of our sliders, providing lean protein and a savory base. Use rotisserie chicken for extra convenience or bake or poach your own. Shredded chicken is preferred for the best texture in the salad.
- Mayonnaise (½ cup): The creamy binder that brings the salad together. Use your favorite brand; full-fat mayonnaise provides richness, but light mayo can also be used for a slightly lighter option.
- Celery (½ cup finely diced): Adds a refreshing crunch and subtle flavor to balance the richness of the mayonnaise and chicken. Finely dicing ensures it’s not overpowering in the sliders.
- Red Onion (¼ cup finely diced): Provides a zesty bite and a hint of pungency. Red onion offers a milder flavor compared to white onion, but you can use white or yellow onion if preferred, ensuring it’s finely diced.
- Fresh Dill (2 tablespoons chopped): Infuses the chicken salad with a bright, herbaceous aroma and flavor. Fresh dill is key for its vibrant taste, but dried dill can be used in a pinch (use about 1 tablespoon dried).
- Lemon Juice (1 tablespoon): Adds a touch of acidity that brightens the flavors and prevents the chicken salad from tasting heavy. Freshly squeezed lemon juice is recommended for the best flavor.
- Dijon Mustard (1 teaspoon): Provides a subtle tang and depth of flavor that complements the other ingredients. Dijon mustard has a sharper flavor than yellow mustard, adding complexity.
- Salt and Black Pepper (to taste): Essential seasonings to enhance all the flavors in the chicken salad. Adjust the amount to your personal preference.
- Slider Buns (12-16): The perfect vessel for our chicken salad. Look for soft and slightly sweet slider buns for the best experience. Hawaiian rolls or brioche slider buns work wonderfully.
- Optional Toppings (as desired): Lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, cucumber slices, sprouts, or your favorite slider toppings to customize and add freshness.
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken: If you are not using rotisserie chicken, cook your chicken breasts. You can bake them, poach them, or grill them. For baking, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place chicken breasts on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through and juices run clear. For poaching, place chicken breasts in a pot, cover with water, bring to a simmer, and cook for 15-20 minutes until cooked through. Once cooked, let the chicken cool slightly, then shred it using two forks or your hands. Ensure the chicken is cooled before mixing with mayonnaise to prevent it from becoming oily.
- Combine Chicken Salad Ingredients: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the shredded cooked chicken, mayonnaise, finely diced celery, finely diced red onion, chopped fresh dill, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard.
- Season and Mix: Season the chicken salad generously with salt and black pepper to taste. Start with about ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper, and then adjust according to your preference. Mix all the ingredients together thoroughly until well combined and the chicken is evenly coated in the mayonnaise mixture. Taste the chicken salad and adjust seasonings as needed. You might want to add a little more lemon juice for extra brightness or more mayonnaise for creaminess.
- Chill the Chicken Salad (Crucial for Make-Ahead): Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap or transfer the chicken salad to an airtight container. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together and for the chicken salad to chill. Chilling also makes it easier to handle and assemble the sliders. For optimal make-ahead convenience, you can prepare the chicken salad up to 2-3 days in advance and store it in the refrigerator.
- Prepare the Slider Buns: Just before serving, gently slice the slider buns in half horizontally. You can lightly toast the buns if you prefer a warmer, slightly crispier slider. To toast, you can brush the cut sides with melted butter or olive oil and toast them in a skillet or under a broiler for a minute or two until lightly golden. Toasting is optional but can enhance the texture and flavor.
- Assemble the Sliders: Take the chilled chicken salad out of the refrigerator. Spoon a generous amount of chicken salad onto the bottom halves of the slider buns. Aim for an even distribution of chicken salad on each slider.
- Add Optional Toppings (Customize Your Sliders): If desired, add your favorite toppings to the sliders. Lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, cucumber slices, or sprouts can add freshness and crunch. Place these toppings on top of the chicken salad.
- Top with Slider Bun Tops: Place the top halves of the slider buns on top of the chicken salad and toppings.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve the Make-Ahead Chicken Salad Sliders immediately for the best texture of the buns. If making ahead for a party, you can assemble the sliders a little in advance but it’s best to add the chicken salad just before serving to prevent the buns from becoming soggy. For picnics or potlucks, pack the chicken salad and buns separately and assemble on-site to maintain freshness.
