Ingredients
- Ripe Avocados: (3 large) The heart of our guacamole, providing creamy texture and rich flavor. Choose avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure but aren’t mushy.
- Red Onion: (¼ cup, finely diced) Adds a pungent bite and a touch of sweetness, balancing the richness of the avocado.
- Cilantro: (¼ cup, chopped) Fresh cilantro brings a bright, herbaceous note that’s quintessential to authentic guacamole.
- Lime Juice: (2 tablespoons, freshly squeezed) Essential for acidity, lime juice brightens the flavors, prevents browning, and adds a tangy zest.
- Jalapeño: (1 small, seeded and minced – optional) For a touch of heat. Adjust the amount or omit entirely based on your spice preference. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly after handling jalapeños.
- Roma Tomato: (1 medium, diced – optional) Adds a subtle sweetness and juicy texture. Remove the seeds and pulp for less watery guacamole.
- Garlic: (1 clove, minced) A hint of garlic enhances the overall savory profile of the guacamole.
- Salt: (½ teaspoon, or to taste) Balances the flavors and brings out the best in all the ingredients. Use kosher salt or sea salt for optimal flavor.
- Corn Chips: (1 bag) For dipping and enjoying the delicious guacamole. Choose your favorite type – salted, unsalted, or flavored.
Instructions
- Prepare the Avocados: Begin by halving the avocados lengthwise, cutting around the pit. Twist the halves to separate them. Carefully remove the pit by gently tapping it with the blade of a knife and twisting (be cautious!). Scoop out the avocado flesh into a medium-sized bowl.
- Mash the Avocados: Using a fork or a potato masher, gently mash the avocado to your desired consistency. Some people prefer chunky guacamole, while others like it smoother. Don’t over-mash; a little texture is ideal.
- Add the Red Onion and Garlic: Sprinkle the finely diced red onion and minced garlic over the mashed avocado.
- Incorporate Cilantro and Jalapeño (optional): Add the chopped fresh cilantro and minced jalapeño (if using) to the bowl.
- Add Tomato (optional): If you are using tomato, gently fold in the diced Roma tomato.
- Lime Juice and Salt: Pour the freshly squeezed lime juice over the mixture. Sprinkle with salt.
- Mix Gently: Using a spoon or fork, gently fold all the ingredients together until they are just combined. Be careful not to overmix; you want to maintain some texture and avoid making the guacamole too mushy.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste the guacamole and adjust seasonings as needed. You might want to add more lime juice for extra tanginess, more salt to enhance the flavors, or a bit more jalapeño for extra heat.
- Serve Immediately or Chill: For the best flavor and color, serve the guacamole immediately with corn chips. If you are not serving it right away, cover the guacamole tightly with plastic wrap, pressing the wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to prevent browning. Store in the refrigerator for up to a few hours. Serve chilled with your favorite corn chips and enjoy!
