Air-Fried Tofu Bites Recipe

  • Author: Jessica

Ingredients

  • Extra-Firm Tofu (1 block, about 14-16 oz): The star of the show! Extra-firm tofu is crucial for achieving that perfect crispy texture in the air fryer. It has less water content than other types, meaning it will crisp up beautifully.
  • Soy Sauce (3 tablespoons): Adds a savory umami depth to the tofu, forming the base of our flavorful marinade. Use low-sodium soy sauce to control the salt content if preferred.
  • Sesame Oil (1 tablespoon): Provides a nutty aroma and rich flavor that complements the soy sauce and adds a touch of Asian-inspired flair.
  • Rice Vinegar (1 tablespoon): Balances the savory and salty notes with a touch of acidity, enhancing the overall flavor profile and tenderizing the tofu slightly.
  • Garlic Powder (1 teaspoon): Infuses the tofu with a warm, savory garlic flavor that is both comforting and aromatic.
  • Ginger Powder (1/2 teaspoon): Adds a subtle warmth and spice that complements the garlic and sesame oil, creating a more complex and layered flavor. Freshly grated ginger can also be used for a more vibrant taste.
  • Cornstarch (2 tablespoons): The secret weapon for achieving ultimate crispiness! Cornstarch creates a light coating on the tofu that helps it get wonderfully golden and crunchy in the air fryer.
  • Optional: Red Pepper Flakes (1/2 teaspoon): For a touch of heat, red pepper flakes add a pleasant kick that elevates the flavor without being overpowering. Adjust the amount to your spice preference.
  • Optional: Sesame Seeds (1 tablespoon): For garnish and added texture, sesame seeds provide a visual appeal and a subtle nutty crunch. Black or white sesame seeds both work beautifully.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess water. This is a crucial step for achieving crispy tofu. Wrap the block of extra-firm tofu in several layers of paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Place it on a plate and put a heavy object on top, such as a cast iron skillet or a stack of books. Press for at least 30 minutes, or ideally for an hour, to remove as much water as possible. The drier the tofu, the crispier it will become in the air fryer. Alternatively, you can use a tofu press if you have one, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Cut the Tofu into Bites: Once the tofu is pressed, remove it from the towels and cut it into bite-sized cubes, approximately ¾ to 1 inch in size. Uniformly sized pieces will ensure even cooking in the air fryer. You can cut them into squares, rectangles, or even triangles, depending on your preference. Aim for pieces that are easy to pick up and eat as snacks or appetizers.
  3. Make the Marinade: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, garlic powder, and ginger powder. If you are using red pepper flakes for a touch of heat, add them to the marinade at this stage. Taste the marinade and adjust seasonings as needed. You can add a pinch of salt if desired, but remember that soy sauce is already salty.
  4. Marinate the Tofu: Add the cubed tofu to the bowl with the marinade. Gently toss the tofu to ensure that each piece is evenly coated in the flavorful mixture. Allow the tofu to marinate for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes for a more intense flavor. The longer the tofu marinates, the more flavor it will absorb. While marinating, you can prepare any dipping sauces or side dishes you plan to serve with the tofu bites.
  5. Coat with Cornstarch: In a separate bowl, place the cornstarch. Remove the marinated tofu pieces from the bowl, letting any excess marinade drip back into the bowl. One by one, or in small batches, dredge the marinated tofu pieces in the cornstarch, ensuring they are fully coated on all sides. Shake off any excess cornstarch. The cornstarch coating is essential for creating that crispy exterior in the air fryer.
  6. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Preheating ensures that the air fryer is at the optimal temperature when you add the tofu, which helps to achieve that crispy texture quickly. If your air fryer model requires preheating, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  7. Air Fry the Tofu Bites: Arrange the cornstarch-coated tofu bites in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as this can prevent the tofu from crisping up properly. You may need to cook the tofu in batches depending on the size of your air fryer. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping the tofu bites halfway through cooking, at around the 5-6 minute mark. Flipping ensures even browning and crisping on all sides. Check for doneness – the tofu should be golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Once the tofu bites are cooked to crispy perfection, remove them from the air fryer basket. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds over the hot tofu bites for garnish and added flavor and texture. Serve immediately while they are still hot and crispy. Air-fried tofu bites are best enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer. Serve with your favorite dipping sauces and enjoy!
